Five Years On From Sarah Everard’s Murder – Honouring Her Memory   Recently updated !

The name Sarah Everard will never be forgotten. In March 2021, Sarah was simply walking home when her life was taken. Her story deeply affected people across the UK and beyond, not only because of the tragedy itself but because it reflected a fear many women live with every day. For countless women, Sarah’s story felt painfully familiar. Walking home with keys between fingers. Calling a friend while travelling alone. Sharing live locations. Avoiding certain streets after dark. These routines have become survival strategies.

Remembering Sarah should not only be about mourning a life lost—it should also be about protecting the women who are still here.

Standing With Survivors

Discussions about women’s safety must also centre the experiences of survivors of sexual violence. Behind statistics are real people—women who carry trauma, fear, and often silence.

Many survivors struggle to speak about what happened to them. Shame, disbelief, and fear of being blamed can prevent women from seeking help. Too often, survivors feel like they must justify their pain. But the truth is simple: rape and sexual violence are never the survivor’s fault.

Supporting survivors means creating spaces where women feel believed, respected, and safe enough to speak. Listening without judgement is one of the most powerful forms of support we can offer.

What Real Support Can Look Like:

Honouring Sarah’s memory means taking action that genuinely supports women and survivors:

Believe survivors: When someone shares their experience of rape or assault, listening with compassion matters. Doubt and blame can deepen trauma.

Speak up against harmful attitudes: Jokes, comments, or behaviours that dismiss or minimise violence against women contribute to a culture where abuse can thrive.

Support organisations helping survivors:  Many charities provide counselling, advocacy, and safe spaces for women who need help rebuilding their lives.

Create safer communities: Better lighting, safer transport options, and responsive support services can make a real difference in everyday safety.

Sarah’s story sparked conversations that needed to happen,

In her memory, we can help build a world where women feel safe walking home, where survivors are believed and supported, and where violence against women is never ignored.

Because every woman deserves safety. Every survivor deserves compassion. And every voice deserves to be heard. 💜
